my oil light came on the other day. i just changed it not even a week ago. levels are fine and truck runs fine. but that damn light keeps coming on and off when throttle is pressed. yesterday no matter what you did it stayed on. any suggestions? keep in mind this motor has 15K on rebuild.

toyota said it may be my "oil sending unit". i hope its something electrical. it scares me being on. i just want it off. i dont have a lot of cash for that shit.

It could be the sending unit. Also if your oil pump was not putting out enough pressure it could cause the light to come on. The last time my oil light came on the engine went bye-bye.

well i guess ill take it to Toyota tomarrow and have them hook it up to diagnostics or something. i want to catch the problem early.

Just hook up a cheap manual capular type guage to verify the pressure is good then just change the sensor. thing costs like 2 bucks at a wrecker 22rs are on the passenger side just behind the motor mount.

today i was putting in some new spark plugs and wires and i got to snooping around the motor to try and catch the cause of this annoying oil light. i found something leaking oil...it looked like a plug of some sort on the block...directly under the oil filter. it had drops of fresh oil on it and when i played with the wire that connected into it...the light inside would flicker. plus the thread on the "plug" was showing...making me think it needs to be screwed in the block all the way....anybody know what the hell that is???? PLEASE!?!?!?! haha.

thanks, justin

that is the oil galley, that plug is leaking your pressure out of the oil system, the sender is further down the galley, that is why your light flickers.

your wire might have a break in it about 1 inch from the sender....or it's just a loose connection.

isnt that the oil pressure sending unit? im pretty sure it is, i bought mine for like 12 bucks. make sure your buying the right one, theres 2 types, 1 is made just for the "idiot light" 1 is for the graduated pressure meter. I agree with zuk too, it could be a loose connection, but when mine went, it started leaking around it too. even on my escort, same thing.

dude, the dealer is gonna charge you a ton. just unscrew the oil sender when your changing the oil and plug in a new one, easy. but do check the surrounding wires for damaged.

they said to get the oil light off....they'd have to get into the instrument cluster. $208 with labor and parts included. for a freakin oil light. at least they froze my tie rod ends up and had to replace them for free....plus some steering part that had a recall.....sweet.

the oil sender is the plug with the wire coming out...right under the oil filter right?

It all comes down to time and money which do you have more of? Which can you let go of?

yep that be the one.
i think 200 is a lot to pay for that, did they assure you that your oil pressure was good?, i am a bit skeptical about them saying that they need to tear apart the dash to fix it too. even so, theres only a couple of screws holding it in...how much could you find one for in a wrecking yard? i bet a lot less than 200 dollars. But try the sender first.

they checked oil psi and it was all up to spec. he said to totally replace sender and wires and all that shit he'd have to tear into the dash.

GET THIS.....they did something to freeze up my tie rods so they had to replace those for free. so for $81 i got my motor looked over...tie rods...and free alignment. not too bad i think.

apparently i need new front wheel bearings, a new pinion bearing in the driveshaft, and that oil situation taken care of. then itll be like new (hopefully). oh yeah....and a new combo switch for my ac/heater motor...only the high and highest levels work.
