Hi, i got a 80 yota pickup with a 20r 4 speed, im getting 5.29 gears for it and it will be locked front and rear, i wana run 38 inch tsl swampers for it but something is telling me i wont have enough power to spin those tires for hill climbs and deep mud............ what are some options, i dont wana stick a huge heavy V-8 in there but a 4.3 liter chev sounds ok,..... what about a 22R would that be enough power, is a 4.3 liter swap costley or should i be fine with the 20R ...........
Tiggy- Something is telling me you should change your order to 571 gears....perhaps some PRECISION brand 571 gears. And a pro gear install and knock yourself out! Your 20R is needing all the gear it can get with 38's....the gears won't break if they are put in to spec. Your clutch will love you for it. 571 will only gear you down a few per cent on the low side....so basically if your speedo says 53 then the actual speed will be closer to 50. ZUK
or a 22re for an easy less expensive swap.
or the best swap of all time the tacoma 3.4 v6 motor is basicaly the best of the best in my opinion.
and 5.71

That would be nice. What do you get to set up gears in thirds? Pm me.
Yeah a 22r would do the trick also. You can try the new gears first before you put a motor in, I knew a guy that ran 38's on his 20 r with a 10 inch lift....it was a mud truck only. It did fine!

A stock 22R doesn't make much more power then a stock 20R.
