I am getting ready to buy my first Land Cruiser...so excited! I've owned three 4Runners (87, 97, 03) and I am a hardcore toyota fan. I wouldn't buy anything else! So, I am looking at buying a 1982 FJ-60 Wagon 4spd with 125k orginal miles. It is said to have a strong transmission and runs great. The only mods I know so far that it has is a recent upgrade to the suspension (Old Man Emu) and 32" tires. I am by no means an expert at mechanical anything. I know how to change my own oil and do minor electrical work. So my question is:
What are some things I should look for or be aware about when going to check this baby out? Engine problems, rust, electrical, etc... I know if anybody could help me out it would be you Toyota savvy boys and girls. Thanks for your time and input. It will be greatly appreciated.

I have an 84 and can only think of a few things, frame rust, and a big one is the power steering pump, if it has a leak it drips into the smog pump and kills your smog pump. (I fixed mine by removing the impellers in the smog pump, so it doesn't function, but it does still work to tension the belt and looks good for IM inspection).
The best thing I can think of for you to buy for it is the FSM from Toyota.

If you have other questions you might ask over on IH8MUD.com in the 60 section.

I won't go any farther with that :redspotda ....Ashleyrae, you have a great asset in Luke porter at 4X4LABS, Luke is in GV up by the airport and a cruiser expert. All they work on are Cruisers so have him take a look for you, he can let you know what to look for and what to look out for.....I know this post is a little late but if you bought it or are looking for another give him a call.

as mentioned, frame rust. look at the rear crossmember first, since it's usually the worst. they also tend to body rust on the snake blinders (starting up by the front fender), and the rear tailgate. if engine is leaking oil near rear main, check rear oil pan bolts as they tend to loosen, but a rear main isn't too much of a pain the in 60's. they really are wonderful, fairly bulletproof vehicles. do you know of a maintenance history?
