Sometimes when I go to start my truck it sounds like my starter is not engaging with the flywheel, all the starter does is spin. Any input on what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Might need a new flux capacitor :devillook, or maybe just a new stater.

If there is no grinding noise, the starter isnt kicking out and just spinning....which would mean new start time yay.

If the starter is spinning, then you are probably missing some teeth on the fly wheel. From looking at the design of the starter, the shaft must be shot forward by the solenoid in order for it to make a connection with the starter contacts and thus start spinning (i.e. it's impossible for it to spin without the shaft coming forward to engage the flywheel).
Some vehicles have a cover plate near the starter where you can look at some of the flywheel. Anyone know of a good way to check the flywheel on a yota? Might be helpful to pull the starter and look at it's teeth and what you can see of the flywheel teeth.

I would start by pulling the starter out and checking the teeth on it. Then I would take it to a parts store and have it bench tested. If the starter checks out then you know you need a new ring gear on the flywheel. My guess is your starter is toast, or at least the gear on the starter is toast.

However, if the solenoid does not kick out the gear it can just spin, I have had it happen.

This is what happened to me, so I just replaced the starter. BTW thanks for all the responses I really appreciate it.

My truck was getting hard to start. It acted as if the battery was going down or I had a bad connection. As it turned out, the problem was in my alarm's start relay. I replaced it and it works perfect.
I know, "That isn't what's wrong with my starter". I just added that bit of info for the guy that is searching for stater fixes.
So all of you self-appointed :cop:"Post Police":cop:, don't get your panties in a wad.
