my friend told me about a "paper clip" trick to check trouble code/check engine light, anyone know this or how to do it?

switch the ignition off, then you can go to the plug in, located under the steering column (usually to the right), remove the cap if there is one, and use a paper-clip, bend the paper-clip into a "U" and insert it into the very first two openings, the top and the bottom on the first column. Then switch the ignition back on and watch your check engine light, it should flash "one" then "one, two, three" indicating 13 that it is being read, it will flash "13" 3 times. Then it will flash the code, "one, two, three" and "one, two, three" would inicate diagnostic trouble code "33." It will flash each code 3 times, and then move on to the next code. You'll have to watch the check engine light, and steady look at it, and count how many times is flashes to see what trouble code it is displaying. Then you can lookup "Diagnostic Trouble Codes" for your particular vehicle make/model on the internet.
something i found...

If you have a CHILTONS repair manual for the 70-95 Toyota Pickups and Landcruisers, it displays all the codes for the 22RE's and other EFI motors from each respective year. Very Helpful...Just throwing that out there.

will the check engine light only come on if there is a code to read? or will it not come on at all until the terminals are jumped?
by coming on im not talking about flashing codes, but will the engine light light up anytime there is a code to read? or is it possible for it to not come on at all until the terminals are jumped?
thanks,
John

It really depends on the code most of the time the engine light will only come on when the computer is experencing the problem and then turn off, so you might see the light or you might not but the code will store itself in the ECM, then you can retreive it unless you disconnect the battery. On your truck you have to jump Te1 and E1 in the diagnosis port.

Ohhhh, no kidding. i always assumed it would stay on.
not to sound stupid, but which ones are those, are the the ones on the right, under the steering wheel cover/ dash? and jump the first 2 terminals on the 1st column (columns starting from right to left facing windshield). and read the codes?

The Diagnosis port is on the passenger side of the engine bay behind the battery. It says Diagnosis on it.

If you open it up there is a diagram on the inside that tells you what ports are which and all you have to do is use a paper clip and jump the Te1 port and E1 port and turn the ignition on but not start it and count how many times the Check Engine light flashes. You also need to jump the Te1 and E1 ports when you are timing it.

I just flashed my codes today. Get the vehicle up to operating temp, shut it off and then run the paperclip from terminals T to E1, they also maybe called TE1 to E1. Turn the key to the on position but dont start it. If theres no codes to show the check engine light will continuously flash, for code 5 it will flash 5 times ( about 2 flashes a second). If there are two codes to show it will do the first, wait 4-5 seconds and show the second. So if it shows codes 5 and 6, there will be 5 flashes, a 4-5 second pause then 6 flashes.
