Well i drove from Iowa to UT and white smoke started coming from the tailpipe but only at idle. sounds like the headgasket so with 163K on it I thought I'dd do the timing chain too. Anyone who's done this before can help in exchange for some $, i'm in provo. I'll have tyo get a haynes even though they suck pretty bad, don't have time to get a factory toyota one. I have to head back to Iowa by the end of the week. I wanted to go to mini-moab when I get done. Anyone ever crack their head on the 22re motor? I think I need to get the head checked too, just to be sure. Sorry for the weird post. 375-0554, thanks. Also anyone with stock steels(white, four long slots) want to trade for my steel chrome toyota wheels, let me know, I brought them to UTAH.

I am in the process of it, but not done yet.

Here are some great online guides...

http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/timingchain/
http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/EngineMods/TimingChain.shtml

And here is the service manual for a 93 22re, but the info should be the same.

http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/engine/8timingch.pdf (link blatantly "borrowed" from a Yotatech member's thread)

Good luck... ;)

almost got the lower intake off, there must be 85 bolts holding the damn thing on. took off the valve cover and sure enough, the entire drivers side guide is gone and its lightly eaten into the aluminum.. As soon as I pull the head, I'l have it machined/inspected at the machine shop. Bought a new t-chain kit from autozone, wish i had time to get it from DOA or someone who makes the metal guides. hoping its just the HG that's causing the white smoke, not a crack in the head... I'll post pics when the t-chain cover comes off.

well, I got the head off and sure enough the whole driver side guide is missing, probably in the oil pan. anyone with a cracked 22re head, where was the crack? Thanks for all the help and the links on the job.

call Cleggs machine shop in orem. they have done lots of toyota stuff, and may have a rebuilt head ready to go. i had them rebuild my 22re head 2 years ago.

Oh yeah, my head was cracked alright, freakin grand canyon! I went to C&T and they had a new one for $425, bought a t-cover too while I was in there. Got it all together and its running right now, but coolant keeps going down in the radiator. I'm hoping I don't have some massive coolant problem, no leaks. I drained the old oil, ran new oil for 5 minutes and drained the new oil and changed the filter, put all new oil in with new filter (total one new filter, two oil changes). when I drain the first batch of clean oil out of the pan, it was chocolate milk, not anywhere near the fresh stuff I put in 5 minutes previously. I've now run my truck for about 2 hours and I don't want to lock up the bearings by having coolant go into my oil pan, I just can't tell if I have screwed something up or not. The last 2 times I checked the coolant it was down a little in the radiator (1/2-3/4 inch). Could this be just from the system self bleeding and getting air bubbles? i should prob have a pofessional pressure test the cooling system to check for a "leak down" kind of situation right?

If you've run for 2 hours I would think it would have gotten hot enough to evaporate the rest of the water left over from the crack. I'd drain the oil again since it will only cost like $10 and see what it looks like. If there's more water in there either get it pressure tested or check into what a tester costs and do it yourself.

If it makes you feel any better, I went to change my timing gears and chain due to a broken guide causing the time to jump, and when i got done I had no compression in any cylinder. I'm currently tearing the head off to see how bad all of my intake valves are bent. :(

Hope you get it sorted out. I'm thinking either the top of your block is warped, or you have a crack in the block somewhere too. Did you overheat it at all before you started having the smoking problem?
