hey, ièm wanting to build up my truck to a capable trail rig.
this is what i want to do to it.
Its a 1980 Toyota 4x4 shortbox. it has a new frame, it has a 20r 4cyl and a 4 speed tranny,
it allready has about a 4 to 5 inch lift kit on it, i wana scrap that for more lift and use some chevy half ton springs in the rear and not sure about the front but i want to half at least 6 to 10 inches of lift, enough to fit 38s on it.
these are the mods i wana do to it
- a spool or aussie locker for the rear
- 27 spline lonfeild 4340 chromoly front axels
- 27 spline longfeild 4340 c****************ly iner rear axels
- Yukon 5.29 Gears
- 38 inch TSL Swampers
- chevy half-ton rear leaf springs.
would that be a good trail rig , would i also be running into problems with breaking axels cause of the big tires.
and for future upgrades maby get a locker for the front or would that be to much for the front axels to handle with 38s
anything is capable if you want it to be.
and yes this is a good platform to start from.
get rid of the 4speed though. and possibly a 22re

I would say keep the lift to a minimum and cut the body if you are planning on doing trails. The axils should be fine with the 38s but you will want more than the 20r and ditch the 4spd. The front housing will need some trussing.
But then you could just wheel it as is and change things as you learn.

You dont need alot of lift to run big tires. My trucks a 83 short box with a custom tube bed.. my front springs are 4" pro comps, i have the 1 1/2" over stock front shackle and a 3" body lift... my rears are 63" chevvys with a 10" eye to eye shackle.. i run 38.5 14.50 TSL SX's
Just trim your fenders if you do it right it wont look to white trash... Stay away from that 10" of lift.. to big is a bad thing on the trail.. big tires minimum lift with lots of room for the tires to travle is what you want

do you have any pics of your truck ?
also , how hard is a 3 inch body lift to do on a 80 shot box pickup ?
also how long does it take ?

Keep it as low as you can.I run a 37" tire,3in" of lift and a 1-1/2 body and cut wheelwell's on my runner.I have rear's up front and stock wagg's out back. The spring's nearly sit flat with just alittle arc to them.....

I would start out with 35s. 38s are gonna break stuff. One good thing about 27 spline longs are that if you somehow broke a birf ( nearly impossible ) you can replace it with a stock birf.
Dont get a spool for the rear, just get the lockright, aussie, lunchbox type locker.
Do not get any hoopty springs like procomp, roughcountry etc.
Spring for the marlincrawler.com springs or Alcan springs.
Instead of gettin longs i would get some marfield birfs, and invest the rest of the money into a highsteer setup.
The stock pushpull steering sucks and it WILL break.
The stock 4speed will probaly hold up for awile.
I dont suggest putting in a 22re, they work well but you will want more power for the work your putting into the swap.
This is my opinion and im sure sombody has to say something differant but this is what i would do in your situation.
I crawl 90% rocks and 10% muddy trails in the winter.
Hope my input helped.

I love TSLs' i really couldnt ask for a better all around tire.
Yes atleast upgrade to marfields $80 each. They can be found at marlincrawler.com
Get a lockright for the front and rear.
I beat the crap out of my old one and it never broke. They are not a 100% locking so everynow and then itll slip, but worth having.
If your going to get a spool then just weld up the spiders. Its going to do the same thing.
I ran spooled on 39.5 tsls and i broke 30 spline 60 shafts once a month. My tires wore out twice as fast and its harder to make sharp turns.

Tiggy,I would have to say leave it where it is at and run 35's,change the steering, put your rear's up front and whatever in the rear maybe gear it,dualcases for a strong cheap build up.
On my runner I run for quite sometime with 36"in buckshot's with stock steering running a drop drag link.Used a BFH on the firewall to help the tire's clear under flex. The only crawlin I do is once a year when I go to moab and I do all of the 3-5+trail's,sometime's the steering sucked but I never had a prob, just worried about the stock birf's and I'll continue to run them,I just carry spare's.Otherwise I wheel here in wyo and the terrain is totally different mostly old two track's,mud, steep climb's,snow etc so it's not as hard on thing's and it work's for me....

Ok , now that i have read some stuff, how does this sound
35 inch tires
4:88 gears
Marfield UM-06 Chromoly Birfield Joints
and a welded rear end or a locker in the rear.
will the front axels be strong enough for the 35 inch tires .
also i would like to get powersteering in my truck, is there a place where i can buy a powersteering kit .
thanks

Sounds like a great start.
The front will hold up just fine to the type of wheeling your going to be doing. Birfs are the main weakpoint on a toyota axle.
The only thing you have to understand if you weld the rear is that your tires are going to wear down really fast.
When you do highsteer you have to get a p/s box off a 86+ truck, and if thats not enough for you, you can always do hydroassist for really cheap.

Ditch the dual shocks and put some chevy's in the rear and 4" front springs hi-steer and lockers 2" drop hanger front 3" drop shacle hanger in the rear and mabey a lift block to level it out

Hydrolic assist. Dont worry about it, you wont need it for 35s.

I will also be doing hydro assist on my rig so there will be a step by step write up on it in a few months.

if i was you...
Get some 4" springs for the front.. maybe some 63" chevs for the rear... put 5:29's in it and Weld the spiders in the rear or put a lock right in it.. Do some longfield 27 spline birfs. dont worry about the Axles they will be fine. and just have fun with it... hell we all had to start some where not everybody starts with a super flexy rig.. i ran 4" procomps front and rear for over a year and i had a blast with my truck... if you put the easy bolt on stuff in first it will give you time to learn the truck then you can decide what you would like to make your truck turn into...
tiggy where do you live ?

To setup the gears/locker it will run about $150-200.
For the springs...I'd really look into getting some of Marlins 4" USA made springs. Alcan is another great choice. I will be replacing my old springs with Alcans in the near future.
