There is a interlock (under one of the toper bolts) for the removable top that won't allow full operation unless it is in place. also alot of problems have lead to poor grounding. There is also an interlock with the rear wiper, if not fully seated the window will not work. hope this helps.

you can also just reverse the polarity of any dc motor to make it run backwards, try hot wiring it.

H'mm, before you go tearing things apart and rewiring, have you checked the fuse? First things first. Then check that the wiper is fully seated and the bolt for the interlock is installed.

This is a really common problem with the old 4runners and even the newers ones. I too have an 88 and have been through every possible diagnostic there is. The problem is either one of two things

1) there isa relay switch on the drivers side just behind the roll bar. in order to activate it (making the window work) there has to be a bolt in the hole. this is a safety mechanism so that your window won't work when the top is off. just make sure you have bolts for all the holes.

2) the most likely problem (and most expensive to fix) is that you have a burnt out lifter motor. you can access the motor from the inside, anyone with small hands can do it. I had mine checked out by a guy who fixes electric motors, he said it was unfixable. LUCKILY, you can get a brand new motor from Checker with a lifetime warranty. it costs $89 and it works great! this motor can also be used for the automatic doors too, since it's the exact same one.

Sorry I just re-read your question. If you do not want a functioning window and you only want to ge the window down, the easiest thing to do is just take out that motor. once th motor is removed the window will go down. it's a lot easier than rewiring a motor that doesn't have power in the first place. if you want the window to stay down after you remove the motor, then just open the tailgate (makes the job more comfortable) and replace the motor again. the motor will keep the window in place whether it's up or down. but I suggest you just get a new one so you can make it work whenever you want.
