I have an 83 22r engine. The engine has a knocking noise that sounds like it coming from the bottom half of the engine. The knocking noise can be heard during idle but as the engine revs the knocking noise seem to disappear or just gets harder to hear cause I really can't hear it when I rev the engine. Does anyone know what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

rod knock, need to replace main bearing and rod bearings and pull crank out, you can do it in the truck if you pull the tranny.

Thanks for the reply. How hard is it to change the main bearing and rod bearings? I have a friend who says he could do it but he is not that reliable. Do you think I would be better off changing the motor cause I do have three extra motors. Do you know what I am in risk of damaging if I just keep running the motor in the condition it is in and do you have an idea of how long it will last?

It's hard to tell how long it'll last with a rod knocking. I had an 83 with a rod knock in it. And it only lasted me about 2-3 weeks. But I was trying to blow it up.

If you catch it in time, it's a pretty easy job. But when I tore mine apart, the no.3 rod bearing was in 4 pieces. It was bad enough that I'd have to have the crank machined for larger rod bearings. It really chewed up the crank. Not to mention the rod. Oh well, I was having fun when it popped. Plus, I just swapped in an EFI engine into it.

if you have a good bottom and you lacking funds just drop that in, the bearing aren't that hard to swap but you have to pull them to make sure it wasn't machine already, you can even rebuild the block in the truck if you want but it is easier to pull it our if it is a wrist pin knock if it is louder from the top then it is a wrist pin, louder under the truck them it is a bottom bearing, you won't know it need machine till you pull the oil pan and the bearing caps and rod end caps, if it has a "smear" of metal or copper on the bearing showing you need to machine it.

i suggest you build a hybrid. if you are gonna do some swapin. 22R Block with a 20R head.
best OEM mod Ive ever done.

How noticeable is the compression? Can you still run 87 octane without knocking?
