I have a 85 toy the 22re was just rebuilt has 380 miles on it the problem is the engine warms up to normal temp then slowly rises to almost the red mark for a few seconds. then it slowly goes back to normal. after that it runs fine the rest of the day, it only does this on the first start up of the day. I thought it was the thermostat so I replaced it but it still does this is this normal. or does anybody know whats rong? The radiator is in good shape so I dont think that is the problem. Any help would be great.

Go here (http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/index.shtml#Thermostat) and scroll down to the section on engine temp overshoot.

i installed a probe sensor and themistor wire type gauge. I noticed, if the coolant is low, the temp suddenly rises, then as it gets flowing good it goes to normal.
maybe you have an air pocket in the coolant system
