Ok I have power to headlights and blower motor but the dash lights are out and when I turn the key the charge light doesn't come on and the truck doesn't start. I checked both fuse panels and nothing was blown. No the batt is not dead either. Its a 84 and I am thinking it might be the ingition switch but that wouldn't realy explain the dash lights not working when the headlights are on would? well thanks for the help

check your fusible links, on the 84 I'm pretty sure its the fusible links are the bolt on ones, the first gens have the wire ones.

does the solenoid click when you turn the key? does your stereo and stuff shut off when you turn it too?

check your grounds too

I have checked the links they were fine. my radio is hooked straight to the batt but the clock doesn't come on when I turn the key but my blower does. I tried hooking up jumper cable from the block to the bat and nothing

hmm that's an interesting problem, does the starter even click?

see if you can jump the starter and get the truck to run?

another possibility could be the ECU but I doubt it

ok I took apart the bottom of the ingition where all the wires are. I started the truck up by hooking the pos wire to the starter wire. I would be ok with run a momentary starter switch and kill switch but no my alt does seem to be charging and my dash lights still dont work. i have 12.4 volts at the battery when on and 12.6 when off. what other wire need to be connected for dash light, clock, and maybe to the volt reg. to tell it my truck is on and to charge. Thx for the help.

if you dont have lites in the instrument cluster, pull it out and check ohms on the ground circut for the lights to the body ground.

make sure all the factory connections are tight, and to help narrow down things disconnect any accesories you installed.

the starter is the ignition switch, the pot in the back sends power to the starter
wire colors for all toyotas are as follows
blue w red accessory (hot in run)
white hot from battery
black with white hot in start
red with white hot in run
black with yellow hot in run
I don't have my books so that is off the kuff don't bash me if one is wrong

you probally have a bad dimmer for the dash lights or there is a relay should be by the parking brake check that, but it is probally the dimmer, by pass it with a jumper wire and the ones with good blubs should be very bright (it varies the ground for the instrument cluster, heat controlls) generally everything in the cab is on that circuit with the dimmer as the master ground

ok i got everything fixed. I just hooked up all the wires minus the constant + and the on for the starter to one side of a toggle and the constant + to the other. Then I hooked up a wire for the non constant side of the toggle to a momentery on push button and the ran the starter wire to the other side of it. It works now I just have the key for the steering wheel lock and doors. Now I am thinking about doing a new wire harness because the previous owned cut and spliced everything most of it I can even see the reason for it was. So has any one ran into trouble when making a new wire harness I thinking about running a painless fuss block too. Thx guys for the help. O ya I think I am going to replace that dimmer switch to because I have noticed when I turn it down a little bit the lights just go out then come back on if I turn it a little more. Well thx agian
