so the other night, out of no where, my truck decided to start idling rough... no big deal, it was kind of cold out... then, first traffic light, it dies as soon as i push in the clutch... after i restart it, idle drops to about 400, and i have to bounce the gas pedal to keep it running... next traffic light, idle fluctuating between 12 and 1500... even weirder... ran fine for 45 minutes after that... next day, has the same problems, recurring in various order... so today i did a tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, pcv valve, spray cleaned the carb, checked and adjusted the carb, oil change, etc.) i thought the problem had gone away, but it came back... any input? maybe valves? maybe head gasket? i dunno HELP ME PLEASEhttp://www.wildyoats.com/vbulletin/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=2#

Sounds like maybe a vaccum leak. Could be time for a carb rebuild too.

i have a rebuilt carb that has like 100 miles on it if you wanna buy a rebuilt carb haha. but if it's really cold outside sometimes people get ice in their carbs and it makes em run like shit so that could be it.

83's don't have MAFs, it sounds like you have a decent vaccum line som ewhere

what would be the easiest way to check for a vacuum leak? i'm in the military and i don't have access to all of my tools back home, just a junk kit i got at the parts store... also, anybody ever rebuilt a weber 32/36? how difficult is it... i know i can get a kit, i just don't have a lot of time to dink around with it... P.S. today it ran fine all day... which further confuses me

Sounds like a problem with the carb. They will sometimes run fine one minute and then like crap the next.

the idle has pretty much smoothed out, but from time to time it will diesel like crazy.... sounding more and more like time for a carb rebuild :1shifty:

I have had Weber carbs in the past. I personally like the factory carb better.

yea i bought the truck with it on there, and i couldn't get a hold of the original carb, don't really wanna go to the trouble of putting it all back to factory, esp. since i'm trying to put together fuel infection for it (or there's always a possibility of a 350 swap) but who knows

I had a 32/36 they are really easy to rebuild, sounds like a float problem, mine liked to eat needles and seats the webers are also hard to tune had to re jet it 4 times to get it right, I have a factory carb off an 82 and I am about 2 hours from you, if you have all your vacuum lines still in the truck it will be a pain to get them right but it is possible, I can put the carb in the mail for a minuim fee, I to know what it is like to be in the military, still am up at travis or if you want help rebuilding yours and tuning it you can get with me and bring it up this weekend
easiest way to find vacuum leaks it shoot carb cleaner around the junctions and lines listen for a change in engine sound

hey thanks a lot man i'm gonna check for vacuum leaks first and see what i turn up i'll let you know about rebuilding this weber.... i think most of my vacuum lines are clipped so it would prolly be a pain to put the factory carb back on.... we'll see how the vacuum check turns up thanks again

I went back to the factory carb from a Weber. I just left off the vacuum stuff that was unecessary. I cut the vacuum lines off and twisted them around onto the port next to it so I didn't have to buy a million caps. The weber I had was a manual choke, just seemed kind of old school, I guess it is one less thing to break though.
