What causes birfields to "click" while turning? I've been told they do that before they give up. Is that true. What is the cause. Bell looks fine. Is it binding of the cage/star/balls? Should I not run them? They are 2 year old Bobby Longs. Thanks
i have heard they click when they get a crack in them and also when they have slack in the cage/balls and in the splines.
and yes i also heard it means they are weak and are ready to go.
There are a few different opinions on this, especially related to the Longfields. Most guys that I have talked to that run Longs say that you can run them long after they start clicking. They can stand up to a ton of abuse before they need to be replaced. Clicking stock birfs is usually an indication that they are ready to let go, with the Longs it seems that the consensus is that you can still run them. Mine made an occasional click when turning, but still worked fine without any issues.

Call Bobby Long? I actually did when I first heard mine start clicking. When Birfs start clicking it is a sympton of wear, sometimes it is also due to the birfs not being greased properly. But at least as far as the Longs are concerned it is not necessarily an indication that the birfs are totally shot.
