Well as my crappy connection here in Iraq has managed to eat my HUGE post a few seconds ago I will now try to recap and get the ansewers I need.

The basics:
I bought my '83 SR5 long bed from a junkyard owner who really kept it pretty thrashed. The interior was shot and I replaced all of it to make it nice again. The motor is a 20R of unknown origin. The cab, bed, and frame are as best I can tell all original. The trany and transfer case might be original but I am not sure. The axles are boxed instead of round. not sure if stock or not. The truck spun a bearing this winter and was the subsequntly vandalized while it sat at work.

Enter the donor:
I bought at auction an '82 (I think not really sure as it is in Alaska with my stuff and I am in Iraq) 2wd SB. The engine was all there and thats what I really wanted. With the vandalization of my other truck this is now a windshield and door donor for the 4x4 as well.

The questions: (I searched the boards using the search feature and found a lot but not and answer to all, still way better than any other source though)

1: With the 20R and 22R on hand and my desire to switch to EFI with the parts a member here has for sale what engine or combo of parts should I use to get the best/most reliable motor from the deal.

2: Are the square tubed axels stock on an '83 SR5 LB and are they better than the round housing axles?

3: I, while chaning the clutch, managed to break the shifter housing top case on my tranny due to poor shop conditions, a haynes manuals lack of proper directions, and my own stupidity. Do I need to replace this? If so can I use the cover off of the 2wd tranny?

4: Like all the other first gens the bead and tail gate on my truck are shot but I do not want to go the flat or tube bed route as this will be my DD to haul my Dirt bikes as well as wheel. What is the best source of a steel replacment bed and tail gate or should I swap a later model box and gate on and which ones go on the easiest/look the best?

5: In the EFI swap are there any good sites or thread that I did not locate in my search? Should I use a seperate fuse box in the hood to make an essentialy stand a lone system os should I run the wiring in and try and replace or splice into the stock harness?

6: I saw in the tech write up mention of a book "How to Keep Your Toyota 4x4 Alive for the Complete Idiot" and was wondering if this was a joke or a real book I can find somewhere? Are there any other books I should be looking for beyond my hanes and other early repair manual?

7: What else off the 2wd can I use for the 4x4? And is there anything that someone needs off of it?

Thank you guys for the help and I am looking forward to having all the parts and gear ready to come home and get her on the road/trail.

ok I can't help you out with all of your questions btu I can try to help with a few:

switching a 22R over to 22RE is a pain in the freaking butt, honestly for all the hassel I'd just swap in a new motor with more power, like the 7mge 22r to 22re conversion (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=316661)

as far as square tubed axles, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this, are you saying the housing for the axle is made of square tube? If that is what you mean, then no, the axle housings are rounded.

for the 2wd to 4wd almost all the parts, cept a few parts of the drive train/running gear. The tranny, and the drive shaft are pretty much it. As for the motor, I've heard of running 22R parts on a 20R, i'm not 100% sure exactly which but you can check

as for the truck bed, I'm pretty sure that you can put a 2nd gen bed on, I think it bolts right up actually. I think you can even do a 3rd gen but you need to do some modification, it wouldn't be too hard to make it work in any case

<insert shameless plug>check out my website its dedicated to first gens www.thegatts.us</insert shameless plug>

You can put the 20R head on the 22R to make some more power. It requires some modification though. The exhaust manifolds are the same, the distributors are interchangable, water pump, oil pan and valve covers. I put a 20R in my truck (it was free) to replace the 22R. So I had to use some parts from both to make it all work.

Well after SEVERAL hours on the net last night I decided to go with the 7GME (not the turbo) from a supra or cressida. I just need to know if it can be done easily with all the gauge hook-ups in an '83. Since it will still be my daily driver I don't want to lose all my gauges. Now I see that it says you need a "later" 5 speed. What 5-speed are they talking about and what came in an '83 SR5?

For the trany guys out there like I said with the broken shifter top cover is that a must for replacment and if so can I take that off of a 2wd tranny? Are all the 5spd shifter cover plates the same tranny to tranny?

Thanks again for all your help guys its really appreciated.

Zack,
where did you hear that you need a newer model trans to fit that type of motor? from my experence the trannys from 1980 through 83/84 have the same bolt up on the bellhousing. the 85through 199- still will match up but the bolt holes are different sizes. So maybe your going to need the same year trans as the motor. When are you leaving the sandbox? are you comming back to Alaska? If you are you should get in touch with me.
Later,
Eric
ps the trans that came in the 83 is an L52 (cast iron bastard, dropped it on my knee. ouch!) had a G52 from a 85 its 4.5 inches longer the a L52.

Well I can't acctually talk about when I am coming back (OPSEC) but yes I am coming back to Alaska. Was thinking about leaving but when I got down to planning it out I realized that I just couldn't do it. I have a buddy who reularly runs down to Anchoridge to wheel since his family is from there. Do you ever make it up to Fairbanks?

Now back to the wheeling  . I will have to re-read that but I though they said you needed to W56 to mount up to the supra bell housing. If I'm not mistaken arn't they stonger anyway? Well thanks again guys.

Yup I just looked and it says I need a G54 or W56 to make it fit. I'm not certain the accuracy of the statment but thats what it said. So does any one have a 1st gen with the 7mge in it? If so what tranny are you using? That and of the two trannies which is stronger/better?

www.marlincrawler.com for your everything you ever wanted to know about tranny's. Both of those are stronger then the L52 you have now.

Don't believe everything on the interent. All the 22r to tranny bolt hole patterns are the same. But yeah, if you run a Supra engine, you need the bigger bearings of the later transmissions for a longer life.
Read 4runner ricks supra swap thread on pirate. It is the most complete information I have seen. It is a huge and expensive job and I doubt that those engines are nearly as reliable as a 22r (but still very cool).
Toyota didn't made axles with square tube. Their front axles have big gussets that make it look kind of square though.

Oh yeah and god bless you and what you are doing for our country. It is not going unappreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for the kind words and the axle info. When looking at the options for upping the power and the option of keeping it all toyota this is really the best option for me.
