Hi, I have an 84 manual trans x-cab and the shifter popped out of the trans. I moved the boot out of the way and I can see where the ball of the shifter sits but not how its retained or removed. I've search these forums but only found stuff for sale, not how to repair it. I'll try to post a picture to help. Thanks in advance.

Look inside and there should be two "pins" one on each side of the top of the tranny. Put the shifter in and twist the metal piece that is on top of the spring. Turn it to the right, it should pop in place. You can see the notches in it in your pic. You can twist it with your fingers sometimes, pair of pliars, or a screwdriver and a hammer.

yeah its kind of a bitch to get that thing back in, make sure the spring is in there too, you have to line up the grooves on the circle fastener and then just push down hard and turn it, I've had the best luck with a friend and 2 flat head screw drivers, grab a friend, have them hold it down with one screw driver, then take yours and put it at an angle pointing down and to the right on the top, then tap it with the hammer so it'll press down and turn the circle to the right

Hey guys, I appreciate the help. I don't seem to have a spring in there so I'll probably need to buy a rebuild kit for it. I have a toyota repair manual but it shows nothing about the shifter other than in the manual trans section it says: "remove shifter..."--nice. Do I need to go to toyota for the shifter parts or does any one make aftermarket parts like that?--thanks again!

I don't know much about this issue but if they say there is a spring and you don't see one well you better find it. you don't need a peice a metal floating around inside the trans.

Now there's a true statement. thing is I bought it from the PO as a project and it originally popped out on him. I suspect HE lost various parts to the truck and now I'm on the quest to find these parts. I'll go to wrecking yard first. Thanks for all the help, and I'll check to see if there's room for that spring to fall down into the trans.

the spring is pretty effin big, its the size of the retaining ring which allowed the shifter to pop off in the first place, if you want I can take a picture of the spring tomorrow.

BTW if while you have that off, do yourself a favor for later, buy a shifter seat and socket replacement. Marlin crawler sells them (lol second plug for marlin tonight) they make it out of urethane which is much stronger and last a lot longer than the stock ones. I put one on my truck and the difference was like night and day. You can get em here MC-10076 (http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transmission/trans_parts.htm#)

OK, I found the spring, it was jammed up into the retaining ring, then I noticed that the tabs on the retaining ring hve broken off so when I jam the ring down and turn it it doesn't grab onto the two locating pins coming in on each side of the trans. I'll have to see about getting a new retaining ring and that ball/socket kit you guys were talking about from marlin's. Thanks for the help guys!

no problem, glad you found it...

I just looked at your pic, and yup those tabs are gone, it couldn't be too expensive
