What kind of tube are you running on that bed? We pulled the bed off of an 84' I got and found that pretty much the frame is rusted to death from behind the cab back.

Thats' 2" .120 wall. It's just going to be attached to stock frame rails. I couldn't talk myself into truggying the rig on it's first go around.

That is some nice work on your cage. I would say your not to far away from a truggy It will be easy to hack off the rear frame now when you get ready to link it

Ya... when i decide to do coils/air shocks or something then i will... but i like leaf springs.

I can't wait until i can go home for a weekend and get some pics of the bed on the truck with floor and all in it.

Made some progress this weekend. Got the bed attached. Made some boomerang shackles to compensate for long springs and short frame. Did a U bolt flip on the rear, installed 5.29's in my new 86 rear axle. Also weld'd it up. As well as front shocks put on. Part of the bed floor got put in but not done yet. Getting all the old bed and spring mounts off and cleaned up was a chore.

Maybe i'll get some feedback this round?

The bed is gonna be covered with aluminum like the rest is. Just was tired of cutting and then notching to fit around the tube.

That was my spare but now it's going in our next project a samurai. There are also 2 rears laying there as well.

Awesome truck. I like the color too. And one of the neatest flatbeds I've ever seen. You probably aren't getting feedback cuz you are clearly way more experienced and a better builder than alot of people on here. One question though: what exactly are the boomerang shackles for? Usually they are to clear body mounts or something else in the way. Under flex do they wrap all the way around your back bumper?

MO_4Runner
01-23-2006, 11:22 AM
I had strait shackles on it, but as weight (trail gear) was added it bottomed them out against the frame. So the boomerang allows more travel and they are long because my pinion angle sucked plus i was 1.5" taller in the front.

Thanks for the compliments. There have been like 175+ views and hardly any comments. I like feedback on my rigs, not sure why.

Figured i'd do my buildup here instead of pirate since i don't want just pure flaming.

wow came out looking great. what ideas do you have for your gas cap line. if you wheel before you put some alum skins on be careful not to snag that sucker on a tree.

hrew or dom?

what bender did you use? and how long ?

you did a great job.

MO_4Runner
01-23-2006, 07:15 PM
It's HREW, i'm poor college student DOM would have been to much $$$. Thanks for the compliments.
I'm going to cut out another notch in bed floor, shorten the neck and mount it to the tube that goes up right by it.
It's a JD3?? or something bender. Total of about 15hrs with 2 of us doing the bending and notching. We cheated on bending though, buddy converted from manual to air over hydraulic assist. Another 3 to weld it up.

i ment how the rear tubing is 45 degree angled, kinda reminds me of a saucer. how do you like the f150 springs?

MO_4Runner
01-23-2006, 07:56 PM
Dunno, that pic is as far from the garage has gotten. Still waiting on steering stuff from sky. So i haven't gotten to try out my new irok's either. The F150's i think will be much better than chevy's, they are soft plus not as much as shackle needed.

I like it, I like it a lot. Awesome rig, awesome color. I hope to have something similar soon. I was even going to paint mine bright orange, but I was gonna go Dukes of Hazzard, with the 01 on the side. Awesome work on the bed.

I will admit I am one of the many that look and not post. No money equals no mods. I like the tube work. That is sweet for sure. Like the color too!!!
Keep it coming.

Just like my Sig. says wheeling on the cheap because I am always broke.

Thanks for compliments. The color by the way is Kubota Orange... $36 in the whole paint job.

Anyone know what size pipe or tube to get to sleeve my front shaft and extend it?

You could make a square front shaft.

oh, and here's the info you wanted:
and here's a linky linky (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418134&highlight=square+drive+shaft)
Tube size for Sleeved front Driveshaft

In a previous post (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=248137) it was stated the drive shaft could be sleeved with some 2 3/4" x .083" wall tubing. Took some quick measurements and it looks like this is for a non IFS front drive shaft.

OEM OD for the front drive shaft tubes that I have are:
IFS......71.55mm or 2.816in
STD.....65.27mm or 2.569in

Very nice buildup so far. I love the color as well and I want to paint my 84 4Runner orange. My wife wants it either white or yellow :bluecryin On the paintjob, did you paint it yourself? "Kubota Orange... $36 in the whole paint job". I know what Kubota is but do you just walk into your nearest Kubota dealer and get a gallon of their Orange? Did you spray it on with a gun or have some spray paint cans made of the stuff?

On the the suspension, I am planning on running the same setup. I plan on running the hardtop as well as some pasengers and an exo cage in the future. Do you think the stock F-150's springs are too soft for my application? How much lift did you get out of them? I want to run the same tires as you or maybe the 37 inch bias ply Iroks so I need some lift to clear my rear fenders.

Are you going to convert to high steer? Might be a good time.

Once again, nice buildup!

Thanks for the info on shafts. I'd been searching on pirate and read 2.5" schd 40 pipe would do the trick... but now i'm not sure with your measurements. I know people running square but i don't like them myself.

A friend sprayed it for nothing. We used about a quart and half but did waste some. I bought mine at the local Tractor Supply Store. Like $8 per quart, some hardener, as well as other bs brought me to my total.

I think they might be a little soft. I got around 4" out of them with stock toy shackles. Now i'm at 6". You can always add an extra leaf to stiffen them up. I'll have a better impression once all my trail gear is on, it does have a full tank in the last pic.

I did crossover with ifs box. A buddy fabbed up a steering arm using 2 pass side arms. I know others worry about failure but i've seen him weld cast before and he's a pro welder so i have little worry about it.

I'm thinking i need to cut the front fenders.. Yes they are 2wd not sure why... something along the lines of :
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/alarose41/cutfendertoy.jpg

or

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/alarose41/frontfendertrim38s.jpg

What would you all do?

I also picked up some spare doors to start making 1/2 doors with.

mnmstoy
01-26-2006, 09:14 PM
I dig half doors. Just that I would bring it down to the middle of the door where the seem is at. I would keep the the entire door in tac just incase it starts to rain. You can get a trash bag...open the door and put it over the window frame and close the door your good to go....Clear plastic would be better.
My thoughts anyway.

Yes i'm gonna run plates front and rear (missouri). Waiting until my front winch bumper/stinger is done and then find a suitable place. Gotta put blinkers on also.

How did you set up the 150's? Got a set and am going to put them on my 85 next weekend........

MO_4Runner
02-11-2006, 08:08 PM
What do you mean how did I set them up? I made new hangars welded them on. Then weighted the truck let the springs slide until they stopped. That is were I mounted my shackle. I should have added more weight since my bed turned out heavier than expected.

azredliner

F-150 springs for the rear? Did you have to do any welding? Where do you get those boomarang shackles? What's their purpose?

Did you weld the bed to the frame? Here's my '85. I would really like to build this one to look simular to yours. Yours is the best (my opinion) looking truggy I've seen. The bed on my '85 is messed up, so removing the bed and putting a setup like yours on it would really look nice.
About those boomerang shackles... Where did you get them and how long are they?

Sorry for slow reply guys. I already sold the truck. To answer some of the ?'s.

Yes i had to move both shackle hangar and spring hangar to add f150 springs
I made the boomerang shackles
The bed is welded directly to the frame

Lights are cheapies that can be bought at walmart TSC, etc

Do you remember the measured distance that you moved the stock hanger? I'm going with the F-150's too.

No I sure don't. I was going from long WB to short WB so I was letting the centerpin dictate were I put the hangars. I put it to were I could use a stock SWB drive shaft instead of carrier bearing shaft.

Also after my bed was done and everything there was really no need for the boomerang shackles. I built some normal ones right before I sold it and they were just kicked back slightly.

Your truck was changed from a LWB to a SWB? I can use the bed mounts (in your photos) for a reference.
Thanks. That is one nice truck you have built.
