i have an 86 runner that i will be doing a new head gasket and timing chain on during christmas. i am thinking about doing a new head as well to get some more power outta the lil 22re. its daily driver and i just do random minor offroading with it.
i want to do over sized valves, but wat size would ya'all recomend?
im trying to figure out wat cam to go with also.

and my biggest issue is, where would you guys recomend getting heads from?
lcengineering is pretty espensive, but is it worth th money compared to engnbldr.com's?
im looking at the ported and polished on engnbldr's and wondering if any one has any exsperience with those guys.
im open to any suggestions so keep em coming
thanks
chad

I would recommend the 1mm oversized valves, they give you the most bang for the buck because they are only like $16.00 each. Downey sells them and so do LC Engineering. I think that LC makes good stuff but I think that they are over priced. I wouldn't buy a head from LC unless you want to pay an arm and a leg. It would be cheaper to take a stock head to a cylander head place and have them port it and install the 1mm oversized valves. That's what LC does. It is not that easy though because when you put a ported head and bigger valves on a stock 22RE, the air/fuel ratio will not be correct. Basically with the increased air flow from a ported head and big valves, the vehicle will have a bunch of air coming through and not enough fuel and it will run lean. To compensate for this, you have to modify the Mass Air Sensor (MAS). There are teeth under the cap and that is how you adjust the Air/Fuel ratio. Clockwise= Lean and Counter Clockwise= Rich. I don't recommend doing this, but it is pretty much the only thing you can do to richen up the fuel mixture. There are a lot of articles about it online just go to a search and type "22RE Mass Air Sensor tricks" some stuff should pop up. It is up to you if you want to do all that, I have always been happy with a cam, adjustable cam gear, an intake system, and a complete exhause system with stock internals, they run good like that and they are still very reliable. I could talk about this stuff for a long time and I don't feel like typing all of it so check your PM's, I'll give you my number if you want to talk about it.
