Hey guys new here have some questions and need some input.
some about my truck.
1989 Toyota truck 4x4, 5spd std, 33" procomp x-terain, 22re K&N FIPK, Headers, Jacobs ignition kit, had a cam but need a new one, i think the gears are stock 4.88 i was told.

Well i am rebuilding the engine and have two turbos sitting around one is a rebuilt subaru turbo i dont know the model of hand it is a smaller one, and the other is a t-4 turbo and is massive.

so befor i get to far in the rebuild what should i do should i turbo and if so what one should i use for street and weekend mudding, also the subaru turbo need oil and water for cooling and lub and the t-4 need only oil so it would be a little easier for the big boy.
So is turbo worth the extra trouble and costs to rigg it up or should i just build the 22re with some small upgrades and no turbo,
if i dont turbo i will just port the heads/intake/exhaust, oversized valves new cam im thinking the one D.O.A has the c270, cleaned and balanced Injectors, and just some basic rebuild stuff maby the timing chain upgrade with the metal guides, new rings or pistons if i need to bore the cylinders so i dont want to spend to much money i have to get this truck on the road in the next couple weeks. but if i am going to turbo it i will need to drop the compression to something like 7.5-1 so i can run decent boost.
If i run turbo's on stock compression 9.5 isnt it? how high can i go and would it be worth it?
Well any help is good i am unsure if i will turbo maby i will save the turbo for a later time unless it isnt to much trouble.

my opinion is that a turbo is not worth it. puts a lot of strain on the motor. but if your gonna do it buy a 22re turbo.

I'd keep the Garret before buying a 22RE turbo. A lot of people upgrade the stock one to a Garret. That T4 is pretty big though. It will take a while to spool up so wouldn't be a good match for off road. I've actually tuned my engine down, and changed the torque converter so that my turbo doesn't come in off road. Granted, my bored 3.8 has a lot more grunt than the 22RE, but I don't like the extra heat that the turbo generates. When driving highway speeds it's great, but for crawling it takes a lot more cooling. The Subaru turbo might be a better option since it's smaller so will be more responsive with the 4cyl. I loved my Subaru GL10. HTH,

I personally love turbochargers...the only bad thing about them is that the power doesnt really come in untill higher RPMs. Most people run superchargers on 4WD because the power is right off idle. BUT you said that you like mudding. I think the T4 would be good for your truck because it would make plenty of power at high RPM that you need for mudding also the T4 only needs oil and it might be a little easier to install that the subaru charger. I suggest you should wait and just port the heads and stuff...then later (if you wanted to) you could put the turbo on it, when you had more time, I doubt it would be a one weekend project!

The stock compression for a 22RE is 9.0 I think...if I were you I would put low comp. pistons in when you rebuild it. I think you can run 9 or 10lbs of boost at the compression ratio of 7.4, but dont hold me on that. LC engineering makes a good longblock (I never really look at shortblocks) for use with turbo/superchargers there is one that you can run 14lbs of boost.
