obviously an 85 is the best, but I'm having a hard time finding them for cheap. Looking for ex cab 4cyl manual. 86-88 or 89-95?

it'll be a DD w/ occasional wheeling

I would look at 89-95 if you can afford it. Avoid the 3.0 liter V-6, the 22RE is better IMHO.

you will get alot more room if you go 89-95. the IFS should hold up to light-moderate wheeling, invest in a locker and you will go alot of places. then do a SAS when you start getting into the really tough stuff. regardless, definately go with the 22re, the V6 isnt as bad as everyone says (mine havent been, anyway), but the 22re is a better engine, easier to work on, practically indestructable, and way easier to do an engine swap with if you have the 22re stock.

My price cap is about 5000. Just wondering, did the 22r continue in the 86-88? I thought it was done away with in 85, but I have seen posts of guys in 86's w/ carb issues. I know the 89-95 is longer, but where does it get bigger, in the cab? I plan on massaging the fenders, crank the torsion bars a little, and like a shackle in the rear and run 33's and a rear locker.

22R did continue past 84; im not sure when the did away with the carb. the biggest difference between the 84-88 and 89-95 ext cabs is the extra room in the cab. on the early ones it was basically an extra storage area 8" deep or so. on the 89-95s you can fit somebody back there in a pinch, as long as they are no bigger than a small child.

I know they still had carb's in 86, not sure after that.

They had 22Rs well into the 90s.
lots of 2wd in the 90s were carbed.

should I go with the 22re or the 3 liter? also, 4runner or truck?

22RE over the 3.0. Truck would be cheaper, depends on what you want.

runners are the shiet but after owning one, I think I'd stick to ext cab
I wanted an ext cab long bed forever, but I used to only do mild offroading, no rock crawling at all... not that'd be totally impractical hehe
I am a huge fan of the first gens, they're smaller (can fit in tighter spots) and have the solid axels, I also LOVE the way they look, I'm over the square fenders.
BUT the RE's have more grunt, which helps when towing or going up hills, not to mention they ride a lot better on the road and have more room, but a solid axel swap is gonna be a little pricey if you wanna do any serious offroading
also go with the 22R period, the 3.0 isn't nearly as reliable and they have a history of blowing headgaskets (there's a recal on the gaskets too)
the V6 might be more power... but its really not that much... its not worth it in my opinion

I like the 89 and newer excab. check out this one. http://www.rockymountainextreme.com/showthread.php?t=24346
Only draw back is the 3.0.

It all comes down to personal preference when it comes to these questions. 4runners are good people haulers and they keep your shiat out of the weather. Pickups are better if you like hauling dirty stuff. Its easier to "bob" a pickup to make your approach angle better in the rear and they are all around lighter and usually better trail vehicles. I would personally go with the 22re over the 3.0 no matter what. They are much easier to work on and dont have problems like the 3.0 when it comes to wheeling and flopping and such. The newer body styles are a lil bigger inside and they are consequently heavier with all that. I personally like the 1st and 3rd gen trucks the most out of all. I like round bodies. With any of these trucks you have been talking about (86-95) if you are going to be doing any serious wheeling you are going to want a solid axle swap. Just make a decision on what you really want/need :redspotda

Well, I'm decided on the truck now. But which is easier/ cheaper: SAS or efi swap?

Efi swap is generally cheaper (if you find a cheap parts truck) and doesnt require fabrication skills like a SAS. But are you a good welder/fabricator? Or are you good at wiring? You need some wiring and motor tech to do the efi swap and you have to fabricate for the sas. Do what YOU can do.

well, between me and my dad, we're okay on the fabrication side, but electrical is a mystery. So it'd probably be easier for an SAS.

EFI swap is cheaper, but its a PITA for not much horsepower
solid axle is gonna hurt the wallet a bit, its over 1000 bucks and takes a little time
if you want more power swap in a 5mge hehe

I will be living in North Dakota when I get my truck, so the EFI would be nice in the mornings. Really, I don't plan on running extreme trails, so the IFS with an idle arm gusset should probably be enough. I move in 6 months, so I plan to get my truck in a little under a year, just doing some research and making plans. What should one of the first mods be after 31's, rear locker, and body armor?

What part of ND? ND has some great badlands arias. You can get solid axle and efi if you are patient. I think I can get an 85 efi xcab here in Bozeman right now. I havent looked at it carefully but they are not all that rare and around here are less than 2K. I am happy with my carbed 215k mile 22r and had no more troubles starting it at -40 than with my 99 burb or 94 altima.

Alot of people are moving here now, we need a couple real good winters to scare some away. I guess the worst part is that not everyone seemes to understand that it was beautiful when they got here because they wern't here leaving trash all over the place.
