so winters almost here up in iowa and i was wonderin how hard it would be on my truck to leave the hubs locked in in the winter, for when i just drive around town and havin some winter fun? i thought this would be easier to leave them locked in and just switch from 2 to 4WD when needed, instead of getting out and having to lock the hubs in everytime. im guessing that it wont be a problem, since almost all other trucks have the hubs locked in all the time anyway. plus even if it does put a little ware on them, im planning on putting the Warn Premium hubs on it next spring cuz i still have the factory ones on it. thanks for the advice...

i did that before on my '94 4x4 during the winter in michigan, i didnt have any problems with anything breaking. do you have your torsion bars cranked? if so, that is what will cause premature wear on your CVs. It will also hurt your fuel economy a little, but the 3.0 has poor mileage anyway, so whats a little more, right?

no i dont have my bars cranked...i had planned on getting bigger ones instead of cranking them. but yea i didnt think it would hurt anything, and yea i heard that it cuts down on gas milage, but oh well...gas is going down here, its like 1.99 for the cheap stuff, but i run 87 in mine so yea its a little more. and the 3.0 does get shit for milage, factoring in the way i drive it as well...it gets even worse...i bet i get like 17-18 on the highway...haha...thats bull shit...but i love my truck. thanks...

It'll be fine, just use more gas. As for the Warn Premium hubs, don't bother. The stock Aisin hubs are a lot better. I haven't found anything stronger, or better quality than the stock hubs. Most of the (honest) 4WD shops here in town tell you the same thing. I thought I had a bad hub a few years ago and was trying to find a replacement set. Everyone I called told me to go get a used stocker from a boneyard. They all said they'd sell me the Warns if that was what I really wanted, but that they wouldn't be as good. It turned out the PO had a set of 4.30s in the rear with the 4.10s in the front. That caused the drivetrain to bind, and wouldn't let the hubs unlock..

ouch...thats not good...so ye the i liek the stockers and all but i think my left one is going out...when its disengaged i can like hear soemthing spinning in there thats not spose to be...like a bearing or something thats rattleing around. it still goes into 4WD and works like a champ, but i dont like the sound that it makes when disengaged sometimes...so i dunno...

manual hubs arent hard to rebuild, the guts are actually pretty simple. there is a pretty good guide here (http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/aisin/) at ORC.

Toyota hubs are WAY better. Keep them or find replacements, but don't do warn.

The PO of my 87 runner was a dipshit and drove around LA with the hubs locked for a long effin time, I didn't realize this until I looked at em at the gas station as I was starting to drive home with it... I went back to his house and he told me he never touches it, it ran fine for about a year, only using the hubs like 10 times for mild offroading, but then it started binding up and jackin things up.
if I had to estimate I'd say he drove it around for atleast 2 years with the hubs locked because he said he used to drive it to el salvador and the last time he had taken it off the pavements was then, 2 years before
I wanted my money back though, but he told me that it was for sale as is (the bill of sale said that too, damnit) it was a good truck for its relativly short life, I paid 2k for it too :(
