My 89 toyota pickup has a few problems. If you drive above 60, it burns oil like crazy. I checked it once after driving 100 miles there and back and there was no oil on the dipstick, but I put in one quart and it was back to normal....When first started in the morning it smokes blue colored smoke, then stops when it is warmed up....If you give it a lot of gas( i dont have a tach but extimated 4-5000rpm) it puffs out black smoke. Can anyone help me. The truck only has 130k miles on it. Do you think it needs to be rebuilt? Sooner or later I want to add forced induction(supercharger or turbocharger). Should i rebuild the trans and transfer case too? I dont have a lot of money but i can save up for that kind of stuff.

your trans and tcase are fine.

i would say you leaking oil or your rings are bad and your getting blow by.

hopefully and expert will chime in named 22rekid and he can tell you exactly what the deal is.

either leaky head gasket
or rings.

i do not leak oil, it comes out of the tailpipe. My dad says its just water with black stuff from the exhaust, but i parked by a fence the other day and it left a huge black spo where my exhaust came out... i forgot to say that my truck does run rich, i think thats where the black smoke comes from! ITs the blue smoke i worry about.

hmmm well i would say you have antifreeze leaking into your motor and thats a bad headgasket. i would replace it before you drive it anymore.

well, blue smoke is going to be you burning oil...

when you said that the dipstick showed no oil on it.... did your motor sound like shit? I think that if its not rings, that you might need a new dipstick, and that you might have way too much oil in it.

have you changed the oil since it started doing this? Was it milky looking? is the coolant milky looking?

do you have the V6 or the 4 cyl? If you have a V6 have you taken it in to get the headgasket replaced? (They did a recall on the headgaskets for the earlier V6 motors)

no when there was no oil on the dipstick it sounded fine, i have the 4cyl, the coolant is fine and the oil was changed recently if i drive at 60 i dont burn that much oil, in fact my truck only burns a half a quart every 2 weeks with regular driving, i dont think it has anything to do with coolant, the water i said earlier was condensation from the exhaust. My coolant level never changes during this! My oil isnt too full, it only does blue smoke when i first start it in the morning then it stops after it warms up! The black smoke is from the engine running rich, i think. It only burns oil when i drive above 65 for long periods of time.

head gasket, yes, but have the head rebuilt. Your valve seals are bad too. at high R's they do'nt have time to seal and let the oil leak through with the intake stroke. common problem so don't sweat it.

what do the plugs look like, black and soote is to rich, black sticky or glossy is oil? the oil you are loose has to go some where, and you know that if it isn't leaking under the truck or down the front of the block, then it has to be getting burnt. there are only three ways oil can get in the combustion chamber, bad rings=to find do a compression check dry cylinder and then wet(spray wd-40 in the spark plug hole) if you get a difference in wet verses dry you need rings, worn valve guides and seals= usually accompained by noisy start ups and quiets as the engine warms up, leaking head gasket= oily looking plugs, hardest to find, commonly a problem, can cause bubbles in coolant, coolant fouled plugs, oil fouled plugs, bubbles in the oil(looks like starbucks foam) excessive crankcase pressure(oily breather)
From what I can gather from you symptoms, I would run a compression check both wet and dry, but I would bet you have oily plugs, and it is the valve seals,
now if you are going to rebuild the head do the bottom end at the same time
