Quick question: Can I get the oil pan off without jacking up the engine? Truck is a 1995 pickup w/22re (not a Tacoma). She started loosing oil and I see it leaking out the front of the oil pan. Bolts are all tight, I need to get the pan off and re-gasket it. I can't find my damn Chiltons manual for the truck. I'm down to driving my gas guzzling woods beater, have to get the Toy back in action asap. Help! :help: Also, this truck has the original IFS suspension.

i think you have to drop the front diff. but i have never had to do it.

if you had a SAS i know you can just drop it.

The 22RE is hard on front main seals aswell, so make sure that is not where your leak is coming from. good luck

It's hard to tell, everything is coated in oil. I started the engine and poked my head under and saw it dripping really good out of the front where the oil pan seals against the block. From the non factory goop used to seal the front cover and oil pan, someone has been in this engine before and got cheap on the gaskets it looks like. I might have do my own el-cheapo field fix to it until it gets warm or I can get it into a warm garage. Is the oil pickup in the rear of the pan? Anyone know?

it is in the rear of the pan. good luck I wouldn't want to do the job. the last time I used a forklift to pull the motor up tell the trans hit the body and still had to pull more crap off.

EASY.

Remove the engine mount bolts, Jack the truck up from the bellhousing, You will be jacking the engine up about 5-7 inches, and the oil pan will clear the diff.

also best to do this with someone around, A: Making sure the engine is comming off the mounts, and B: Nothing else is snagging.

Yep, it can be done by taking out the motor mount bolts and jacking up the engine as high as possible. Easiest way is with an engine hoist (cherry picker). My bet would be on your leak being the front main seal behind the crank pulley though.

Well, I have since got the pan down enough to reseal it and it's not leaking from the pan. It looks like the oil is coming from the bottom of the front cover where it seals to the block. I guess it's time to pull the rad, oil pan again, and get the front cover off and seal it all properly. So it sounds like I should get a new seal for the front cover too? Thanks for the replys.

If your going that far I might as well replace the timing chain. If you get the timing chain set, then it will come with all the gaskets including the front main seal.

Ok, about the timing chain. I've read different places about not going factory parts here and getting the one with steel guide plates, something like that? Anyone done this mod and if so, is it working out as advertised? Happy Thanksgiving to you all. I'm thankful I have that Toyota in the driveway!
