ok here's the deal.
1989 toy pickup X-tra cab 4x4
3.0 V6
5-spd.
i found it in a farmers field where it had been sitting for a couple of years.
i checked the fluids which were fine
added 1 battery and some gasoline and it started and ran no problem. he then sold it to me for a fair price.
slapped some insurance on it and drove it 1 hour to my shop. (no issues)
i am now doing an over-haul of this truck to make it my daily driver while i finish my current project. then i get to "modify" the toy
will you kind folks help me clarify some issues i currently have and future problems? (regarding the toy only BTW)
issue 1: only 2 pulleys coming off the crank pulley; one to the PS pump and one to the alt. the truck does have electric fan, but does the water pump need a pulley? or is it internally driven off of the timing belt?
im not sure. but one issue you should address is the head gasket.
check the vin against a dealership and see if its been done or not.

the water pump is internal so to say..it is driven off the timeing belt, if it has lots of miles you need to change the belt, call toyota like KToy said, if yours has the recall you wont need to worry about the timeing belt.
what other truck can you find sitting in a field for a few years and have it start up just fine, that is why i love toyotas.

Yeah, the water pump is driven by the timing belt and like wrnchplr said, you should replace it especially if it has been sitting around for a couple years. It is best to change the water pump too while you are in there replacing the timing belt, you'll see what I am talking about if you change the timing belt. You would hate to do all that work and have the water pump go out.

good call on the water pump..i think the t-belt tensioner uses a specal tool. if you don't know much about this motor or truck i would get a shop manual from toyota they are bling but i have one for my scout II and it can be a life saver.

first of all, thank you for the answer regarding issue 1
issue 2: head gasket was not changed, what would happen if i decide not to strip the engine down to replace the head gasket? keep in mind the engine loses no coolant at this point. can i run it until the gasket does go?
well if you run it until the gasket goes then the dealership will replace it but your motor is on the downhill after that.
get it changed now while your motor is good. also they might replace the whole motor.

i live in canada and wonder about the dealership recall policy up here, i'm not about to spend a bunch of money on this truck yet, at least not until i know what i'm going to do to it. i've only ever worked on domestic v-8's and it would appear that replacing the head gaskets myself is a fair amount of work (DOHC)
or is it?

toyota ran a special service campaign on 3VZE V6 engines of a certain year range, if yours falls under the campaign and has not been done yet take it into the stealership and have them do the service,at the least you will get a new headgasket, at best you might end up with an almost new engine for a couple hundred bux (if the heads and block were damaged by the faulty HG). Get that straightened out with the dealer before you get to tearing into it as they will most likely replace much of that stuff (timing belt, water pump, etc) while they are in there doing the HG.
You can run it until it does go, they will still fix it at the stealership regardless of the mileage, but it might be a while. mine have 190k (94) and 290K (88), and neither has head gasket problems. it may be an engineering flaw, but its still a toyota so it might go a while before it fails.
I have the engine FSM for the 88 4runner/truck with the V6, should be simmilar/identical to your 89. it was well worth the money, i just did the timing belt on mine. if you have any questions shoot me a email or PM.

Yeah, my water pump on my 3000GT ended up freezing the bearings and it took out the timing belt idler and then the timing belt jumped a few teeth and there went my valves :(
