Okay, Im done playing with my smoking 3.0 and its stupid water pump, eithier tomorrow or Monday Im ordering a 3.4. I have checked with the local junk yards and no one has one right now, and even if they did they want 3500 for the motor and tranny. I have found one online for 1525$ shipped from a 97 4Runner with 129k miles on it, I would get the motor, tranny and ecu all from the same rig. With 129k miles would this be worth it? If not where can I get one? Are there any special toyota motor sites, I have looked but I cant seem to find anything.

I plan to have this swap done before christmas so I can go home, there will be an exstensive write up for my situation and I will make sure to include pics, also I should have quite a few 3.0 parts for sale when I am done.

3.0s suck! A 3.4 is a good improvement. 129k is kind of a lot of miles but the price is right for sure! Make sure you get the wiring harness for that vehicle. I did a 3.4 swap into a 81 Toyota 4x4 and it was pretty painless. Some custom motor and tranny mounts are the only thing you really have to worry about. You might need the insturment cluster out of that vehicle to because it plugs right into the wiring harness. I wouldn't buy it unless they are going to include the wiring harness though.

Im going to get this just as soon as I find a swap
http://www.offroadsolutions.com/technicalarticles/34l_conversion_kit_auto.htm
This seems like it makes it pretty painless, already made harness and according to this, the 3.4 bolts right in.

As far as the miles go, I havent actually ordered this because of that, I was trying to see if I could get something better first but Im on about a 4k budget, the ORS kit is 1700$ which leaves me with about 2700 and I still need a t-case and a new radiator (mine is cracked and corroded on the inside) and I will want to go ahead and replace the waterpump and timing belt on the 3.4 while it is out and easy to get too.

dang... a leak problem and he freaking throws it away. i would hate to see what you would do with a dent in a truck bed

just messn. but you are making the right choice if you are gonna swap a motor.

but for almost the same price as the 3500 motor you can get the lexus 4.7 v8 motor with the aluminum head for 4000 i bet with probably about 90000 miles on it.

that would be a sweet runner towing 6000 pounds LOL

but ya 3.4 is almost the best motor. it is the best v6 motor EVER MADE up until the new 4.0 and i havnt driven one yet but im sure it will make it the best soon enough.

good luck. include pics if you can so when i do it its easier for me. also 1500 isnt bad but shipping ight kill ya.

 Hey Ktoy,
Lol Im not throwing it away because of the leak, its just I have done it a ton of times (going through ALL the steps of pulling everything off, replacing it, putting all back together, and then redoing everything 4 or 5 times now) And as far as the smoke goes, Im actually pretty sure its the valve cover gasket now. So knowing I have to do it again, and finding out that everyone hates the 3.0, I have decided to swap it. I know two people who have had the 3.0 blow up on them and I like my 4Runner allot, I want it to be my beater 4x4 one day.
The price for 1500 for the motor, tranny and ECU actually included shipping, I have still been scouring the internet and havent found anything better. Im suprised there are no sites specifically for this. Something like Osaka motors.
I have already started my write up explaining what happened with the waterpump and why Im not fixing it and the trouble I am going through to find a good motor to fit in my budget, Ill take plenty of pics throughout the swap though. Im sure I will be on the phone with ORS allot though.

Well, Im still looking for a motor, but for now I have found this thread where a guy has used his 3.0 tranny and somehow built it to handle the 3.4, http://www.yotatech.com/printthread.php?t=44908&pp=40 has anyone heard of this?

most of the 3.0 to 3.4 swaps ive heard of use the stock 3.0 tranny, the reason this guy modded his, unless im totally off base, is because he was using the TRD supercharger, which with some other mods puts it up around 300 horse (265 claimed by TRD with just the S/C), thats about double the stock (advertised) output of the 3.0.

The reason for using the stock tranny, on a 4x4 at least, is that trucks that came with the 3.4 4x4 have the front t-case output on the driver side, whereas the older (pre 95) trucks have it on the passenger side.

I am in the prosses of doing the 3.4L swap right now. You should talk to Mike at ORS in Denver about doing the swap and he can tell you everthing you need to buy. I would say $1500 is a good deal for that 3.4L. Let me know if you have any other questions, I can help with what parts you might need since we are in the same boat.

Thats probably what I would think too but this is what ORS's website says: The 3.0L and 3.4L trucks both use an A340 automatic transmission. Although these use the same transmission codes, they are very different from each other. The valve body layout and electronic drive systems are very different. These transmissions are driven by their respective ECU's...
u could also look into a 7gme swap? I have thought about this but you cant keep AC with this swap, or at least so far I havent found anyone who has figured out how, even the owner of www.SupraCharged.com

Hey My86yota,
thats cool, Ill send you an e-mail later. My first Yota was an 86 Runner, I loved that thing, it had way more options that my 95 and I miss the removable top.
Im pretty sure Im going to pick up that motor, I have had to wait so far for some other stuff but I should finally be ready after today but Im going to keep looking into this whole idea of rebuilding the 3.0 tranny to work with the 3.4. ORS website says that you might have to modify the tranny crossmember, unless its really easy I dont want to deal with that, I want to do this swap in a week, I dont want to be taking parts to shops and waiting to get them back. Im working on a write up, Ill post it up when the wheels start turning more

Well right now I am ready to order my motor and tranny and ORS kit but I am not ordering anything untill I am certain I am ordering all the major stuff I need, here is my biggest and major problem: the automatic transmission cross-member has to be moved in order to work with the 3.4 tranny. ORS makes brackets on case by case, my 4Runner is no where near CO so I guess they wont be able to help with that. I have found a cross member from www.frontrangeoffroadfab.com but it only works with a SAS, I still have IFS which I dont have any plans (or $$) to get rid of.
So basically Im left with eithier figuring out how this tranny rebuild to fit the 3.4 works or I need to find someone who sells a cross-member for this solution

I think the front range one is for all setups, sas or not. But I am not sure on that. I would call Brain up there and double check if it will if or not.

I actually talked to them on the phone earlier, they said they didnt have anything for that set up and I think brian was the one that explained to me that the torsion bars would get in the way of the cross-member they do have.

Does anyone know if the tranny cross memeber from a 95 taco will work?

For a X-member check out www.budbuilt.com
I know of people that have used his cross members with an auto tranny.

This was EXACTLY what I needed (plus an idea). They have a crossmember that bolts up with U-bolts. The newer style tranny will only be off by about 3/4 of inch to 1 inch, I will have to grind off the nuts on top of my frame that hold on the current crossmember and I should be good to go.

Does your truck have the swap? Eithier way, looks pretty clean underneath
