Hey Everyone,
This is my first post to the forum but I have actually been looking at it for a little while now. I had a question so I finally decided to register and ask, hopefully yall can help
I have a 95 4Runner (Grey, V6, & 4x4) I just installed a new water pump and timing belt, I got everything on perfectly but once the truck got to its normall temp it started leaking again like it was the waterpump. I got the pump and belt from toyota. It looks like it is leaking from just above the thermostat, is there anything around there that could leak? Maybe a freeze plug? I checked the temp sending unit and its fine I dont understand what could be leaking now.
When I installed the water pump I used the metal gasket that came with it, I didnt think I needed any sealant after that, could I have?

Thanks everyone

k first of all the metal gasket on the t-stat is dumb. use some high temp silicone gasket maker.. its a lot better.

bet that takes care of you problems.

make sure the surface is clean and dry and then put it together and dont start your truck till the next day.

takes a MINIMUM of 2 hours to cure the silicone gasket maker.

24 hours is the best though.

if your gonna use the metal gasket you need gasket sealer on each side/ gasket maker.

just use gasket maker

did it have the metal gasket when u removed it ???

You know, now that I think about it, I guess it didnt have a metal gasket when I pulled off the old pump, but that doesnt make sense to me, I will have to go back through my trash and make sure.
I guess I assumed the new metal gasket was made after 95, and thats why I didnt need to put sealer on it. It stinks to have to do all this over again but at least it wont be allot of guess work this time (this was the first time I have done this)

was the metal gasket on the water pump or the thermostat ?

it goes around both, the water pump has an opening for the t-stat to fit in,

I think it is for the 22re

Eithier way though Im guessing your right,

I guess another reason I thought I didnt need sealant is that the metal gasket it put together like a header gasket, it has 3 metal gaskets put together..oh well

I hardly ever use gaskets on water pumps or thermostats. Just get some blue RTV gasket maker and let it try like Ktoy said and you should be good to go. I tend to be very liberal with the amount of RTV too.

Well I just finished up about an hour ago, I did what Ktoy said, I used the metal gasket and I put black silicone on both sides of the metal gasket, its holding fine now.
Thanks guys

no problem man if you still have issues take the metal gasket out.

Okay so the car is still leaking, I think the water is coming out of the head, does that make sense? The leak is above the water pump, I can watch the water come down onto it.

Also the engine is smoking from the back of the head by the firewall, I thought maybe it was just burning off some extra oil but it really doesnt quit

Any thoughts?

Actually after looking at this, maybe it is still the waterpump. If there was no metal gasket to begin with, why would toyota make one later and give it to me with the new water pump? I love my yota but man this pisses me off

gees man did you let your engine over heat and blow the head gasket or warp the head ???

take out the metal gasket.

redo the gasket maker.

if that doesnt work

i would maybe consider a warped head.

plus the 3.0 had a recall on the heads see if its been done.

it overheated but not for that long and it never got into the red zone. Is there anything I can do to see if its the head?

If it is Im not fixing the 3.0, I always hear about them having problems, Is the 3.4 any better? How hard is it to convert to OBD1? I thought about the 7mgte motor but no one with the swap has AC, or at least that I have talked too (supracharged.com)

hopefully this is just the waterpump gasket

if its blueish colored smoke that means antifreeze and oil are mixing.

and the 3.4 is the best motor besides the 22re EVER. i had a tacoma with it and it ran awsome. they did have a recall ont he head gaskets as well but mine had it done the first month after i t was bougth then i bought it and it ran great. towed 4300 pounds up the point doing 70 no problems.

that old of a truck though i would say swap in the 22re motor or something.

its a white smoke

I was looking and at some old post and it said to give toyota a call with my vin number to see if my toy ever had the head recall done to it, and if it hasnt toyota will do it for cheap, does that sound right?

KToy

they will do the head for free. whole new motor for cheap. depending on the vin and what not.

so yes

check your oil and coolant for contaminaton,

look for milky grey oil and or opaque coolant

how's it running?

Roman

Its actually running great. It was running fine before but I put new plugs and new belts on, and between that and getting all the crap that was in the radiotor before out (water and rust) Its reving allot harder now.

I think I maybe have just been a little worried about this, Im hoping my problem will end up being that metal gasket the new waterpump came with, I will post up what happens

Thanks

Hey Everyone, I havent posted in a while but I wanted to say hey and finish this thread incase anyone else had the same problem as me.
The 'waterpump' started leaking along time ago (as you can tell by how old this thread is) I put on a new pump and timing belt and still had a leak after that. Well if anyone with a 2cnd gen 4Runner ever has a leak that looks like its the water pump, check your t-stat housing first. I never had a good seal on mine so that was the cause of the leak. It was never the pump  I felt pretty stupid after figuring this out but Im glad I did because I couldnt understand why this was happening
