INSTALL ON 85 TOYOTA 4RUNNER

By Johnny Lange - January 2003

Slowly but surely you are starting to see less and less snorkels around in the USA with the latest craze of hard-core rock crawling bringing out some really creative and funky rock buggies made solely on peoples creativeness.   Now don't get me wrong, the plates on my rig still say "ROCKCRAWLER" and I love to rockcrawl, but I still am a big fan of the trail/camp/mountain bike/ski universal type off road 4x4 vehicle and that is what I based the form and function on my rig, a 1985 4Runner.   ARB seems to appreciate my style, or should I say I appreciate their style, thus, the purchase of the ARB SAFARI SNORKEL.

SNORKEL 002.jpg (46443 bytes)I purchased the Snorkel through 4Wheel Parts here in Salt Lake City.  Scott and his crew once again took excellent care of me as they always do.  The snorkel arrived a week later from Australia, where ARB is based out of.

Installation was simple but you will need to break out your calculators as the instructions are in Metrics.  And once again, getting used to the down-under references, Fuel = Petrol  , Hood = Bonnet , is fun.  Much as it was on the install of my ARB BULL BAR Bumper.

Simple hand tools is all this took.  A drill, and hole saw was the most complex items needed.

SNORKEL 004.jpg (37995 bytes)Safari gives you a handy template that you tape to you vehicle.  Match it up and mark up the holes.  Remove it and start your drilling.

Removing your inner plastic fender well guard is necessary.

You'll need to drill a 320 MM hole using a hole saw.  I improvised, but it still worked.  By the way, 85 MM is about 3".

The rest of the install couldn't be easier.  The supplied brackets and hardware were proper and fit was wonderful.

Now, much to my surprise, there was no hardware to tubing to connect this to the air intake box.  In looking at the website, I do not think I was shorted anything, I may believe they just do not include this and leave it up to the consumer.  At least on this particular engine (22RE).  Much to my dismay, I have emailed Safari Snorkel with the question and will add the info as soon as I hear from them.
